What period of time is Professor Layton in?

What time period would the puzzle series game Professor Layton take place in?





I'm pretty sure there in France (If I'm wrong correct me) but I'm not sure what year.





Just something that's been bothering me.|||The game takes place in England (with Layton being based in London, although little time is actually spent in London throughout the series)





As for the year, there is no definitive answer as the games do not state this and it's up to each player to make up their own mind





The video game takes place inside a virtual world, which is a mix of different ages and technologies (some of which are beyond what is currently possible in the real world)





If you consider the game to be based on the real world, then the year would not be before the 1960s (as evidenced by the red London buses) but is likely earlier than the modern world (given the style of cars and the relative lack of people within London)





On a side note, the fourth game includes a virtual life mini-game called Professor Layton's London Life (which, as with the rest of the series, makes no attempt to accurately represent London or to define a precise time period)
