Do I need to play Professor Layton and the Curious Village in order to understand The Diabolical Box?

I picked up Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box today.

I would have bought Professor Layton and the Curious Village but the store didn't have it.

Will I be confused, as I am playing the sequel?

Also, what is your personal opinion of the game?

I wanted to buy a game that will exercise my brain but I am hoping the puzzles aren't so hard I'll want to pull my hair out.|||While the Diabolical Box has its own main story, it's part of a trilogy with recurring characters and a sub-plot running through all three games ... so players would get more out of the sequel after having already played the Curious Village

For example, one of the early cut scenes in the Diabolical Box wouldn't have the same impact without knowing the back story, possibly wouldn't make as much sense and (if you're paying attention) spoils one of the significant Curious Village plot twists

Saying that, the Diabolical Box can be played without problem if players didn't want to start with the Curious Village

Both games are very similar in graphic style, gameplay and the types of puzzles

Which game is better, harder or has the best story is simply personal opinion with different players having different views (which may, of course, be different to your own opinion)

If you get stuck, there's always the popular step by step illustrated walkthrough
